Ayaneo's charge limiting function issues

A few months ago, Ayaneo released a feature that limits the charging of the device.

As far as I know, Ayaneo is a company that spends as little money as possible to save money, including the cheapest parts, AI-based customer support, and even reusing design designs.

Because I think this update was released around the time of the Asus Ally X issue. It was one of their promotional methods, and the lack of a proper explanation caused a lot of confusion. Today, I will write my opinion about it.

Normally, the power limiting function is added to the BIOS so that it can be set, but I found it strange that there was only an EC update instead of a BIOS update. I thought that there was no way that the function had been planted in the BIOS in advance, so I tried using it, and found the problem.

The problem is that charging continues even when Ayaneo's Ayaspace program is closed.

Let me briefly explain how charging works.

  1. USB Cable Connect
  2. PD Controller Power Negotiation (PD Controller)
  3. EC Firmware Processing and Interrupt (EC Firmware Interrupt)
  4. BIOS Initialization and Power Policy (BIOS)
  5. Windows Power Policy Application (Windows Power Policy)
  6. PD Power Supply and Charging (PD Power)

They used a trick to add new controllable code between the EC firmware codes from Ayaspace. At best, it adds functionality. At worst, it creates a backdoor. In this way, the functions of the EC firmware can be controlled from the Ayaspace program.

However, there is a problem in this process. When connecting PDs, the PD protocol negotiates power with each other, and once the negotiation is done, it is cached.

In some cases, when the cache remains, the power is cut off even when the cable is reconnected or the system is shut down.

This has led to some confusion, with some users reporting that the charge limiter works even when the device is powered off, while others report that the charge limiter does not work.

This is the result of them trying to do something without spending as much money as possible and not explaining it properly to make it look good.

I think it was a means of promoting at the lowest cost.

Please note that there is a bug in that EC update and the EC firmware update may cause problems with PD charging via USB hub.

#add Sep 4 "I raised an issue about this and requested a fix, but they didn't respond and just closed the email inquiry ticket." This is Ayaneo.
